739,998. Ultrasonic inspection devices. HUTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN AKT.-GES. July 16, 1954 [July 18, 1953], No. 20830/54. Class 118 (2). A test head for ultrasonic inspection of articles having a large surface area and consisting of magnetizable material is mounted so as to be capable of upward and downward displacement in a wheeled framework that can be guided over the work. piece. The test head 1, comprising a quartz crystal, is arranged in a sup. porting member 4 between the triangular limbs 2 of a horseshoe type of electromagnet having an energizing winding 3. A compression spring 5 urges the test head 1 downwards such that when the limbs 2 are held by magnetic attraction in contact with the workpiece (as shown) the test head is pressed against it with a constant pressure. Arms 9 having rollers 11 are pivoted on journals 8 secured to the magnet limbs 2. Tension springs 10 ensure that when the electromagnet is not energized it is lifted clear of the working surface and releases the compression of spring 5. So that the quartz crystal is not damaged by traverse over the workpiece a relatively weak spring 7 is provided beneath the test head 1 to ensure that it is lifted when the magnet assembly is lifted. This spring is accommodated in a groove 6 when the test head is urged against the working surface. The rollers 1 are disposed outside the path of travel of the test head 1 so as not to interfere with any viscous coupling medium that may be used. If desired the appliance may be provided with a flexible pipe to supply coupling medium continuously. A forked operating handle 12 is provided for manipulation of the appliance and a push button 13 on the handle controls the electromagnet energization. A spray gun may also be carried on the device and arranged to be operated from the handle to mark the position of defects on the test piece.
