Abstract

739,994. Change-speed gear. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. June 21, 1954 [Aug. 13, 1953], No. 18134/54. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A tractor change-speed gear transmission includes a tubular housing 2 divided by vertical bulkheads into compartments, one compartment 13 containing meshing gears 65, 66 and another compartment 24 containing changespeed gearing, while an intermediate compartment 19 contains power-transmitting gear means, which is lubricated by splash lubricant collected from at least one of the other meshing gear systems. Lubricant at the bottom of the housing 2 is conveyed by the gears 65, 66 to a trough 70 and flows along a gallery 71 to the compartment 19 which has a horizontal bulkhead 20 and a vertical wall 75. Lubricant overflowing from the wall returns to the bottom of the housing. The compartment 19 may also receive lubricant from a trough 73 to which lubricant is splashed from gears 55, 56. The power-transmitting gear means in the compartment 19 is driven from a drive shaft 28 connected by a main clutch 26 to a shaft 30. This shaft through a clutch 36 drives a torque amplifier comprising a carrier 38 provided with rotatably mounted gears 44 which mesh with a sun pinion 43 on the end of the shaft 30. Gears 45 integral with the gears 44 mesh with a sun pinion 46 mounted on an output shaft 47. The carrier 38 is associated with a one-way clutch device 49 including rollers 50 operating between an annulus on the hub 48 and inclined surfaces 51 on the bulkhead 18. Part of the lubricant can escape between the shaft 47 and the surrounding carrier 38 through an opening 78 into the bottom of the housing 2. Lubricant is prevented from reaching compartments containing the clutches by sealing around the shaft 30 and the carrier 38. In a modification, the clutch member driven from the engine is connected through a sleeve, journalled on the shaft 30, to the gear 66 so that the countershaft 59 is continuously driven.
