739,055. Capping wire ropes. DAVIES, sen., E. A., and DAVIES, jun., E. A., [trading as BARKER, DAVIES & CO.]. March 20, 1952, No. 7223/52. Class 109. A capping socket for attachment to the end of a multi-stranded wire rope of large diameter e.g. as used for suspending mine cages, comprises an outer member 9 into which fits an inner conical member 14 having an internal conical bore into which the opened out wires of the end of the rope are metalled, means being provided to pull and hold the inner member into close engagement with the outer member. Such means may comprise a threaded extension 16 of the inner member which is engaged by a nut 17, the smaller end 13 of the outer member being machined to a flat face. An extension 18 of narrower diameter extends between the threaded portion 16 and the cone 14 to take up play. Two fork-like projections 20 may be provided on the inner member 14 to engage a bolt 21 to prevent rotation of the member 14. In a modification, the inner member may be provided with circumferential grooves 19, Fig. 4. An apparatus for attaching the capping socket comprises a hollow cylindrical capping made up of two similar halves 24, 25, Fig. 6, bolted together. The outer socket member and nut 17 are threaded on to the rope, and the inner member is screwed into the capping box. Small passages 36 are provided in the capping box to allow the first portion of the molten metal to escape, after which they are closed with clay. After the metalling process the capping box is disassembled.
