Abstract
738,773. Fluid-actuated valves. BUTCHER, K. L., and COTTELL, E. C. Dec. 21, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 32383/52. Class 135. A valve for controlling the flow of a fluid comprises a double-beat mushroom-type closure member 50, Fig. 2, actuated by, and adjustable relatively to, a pressure-responsive device, e.g. bellows 56 which is subject differentially to the pressures on the two sides of a restriction 51 in the inlet line, and one of the two valve seats is adjustable relatively to the closure members. The closed end of the bellows is secured to the valve stem by a looking device 58. The pressure upstream of the restriction is applied to the outside of the bellows through a passage 54. The closures need not seat simultaneously or one of the valve seats can be slightly larger than the other. In a modification, the pressureresponsive device is a U-tube 23, Fig. 1, containing a denser liquid with the pressure upstream of the restriction 14 applied to one limb, and the pressure downstream of the restriction applied to the other limb. The closure members 5 move under the control of a float 24 on the surface of the liquid in the inner limb of the U- tube. The float is non-rotatably carried by the screwed stem 6 of the closure member, and its position relative to the latter is varied by turning a handle 31 which rotates the stem 6x. An indicator (not shown) indicates the degree of opening of the valve.
