Abstract
738,520. Electrolytic production of magnesium hydroxide. ROHM & HAAS CO. April 9, 1953 [April 25, 1952], No. 9646/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A process for recovering magnesium in the form of magnesium hydroxide from sea water comprises passing a direct current through an electrolysis cell having anode and cathode compartments containing sea water and separated by an anionic permselective film containing at least 25 per cent by weight of an anion-exchange resin, whereby magnesium hydroxide is precipitated in the cathode compartment. The film may consist of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or natural or synthetic rubber, in which is incorporated 25 to 75 per cent of an anion exchange resin. Hydrogen is liberated at the cathode; magnesium and hydroxyl ions in the cathode compartment form magnesium hydroxide, which is precipitated when the solubility product of magnesium hydroxide is exceeded. Chlorine and oxygen are liberated at the anode, and hydrochloric, hypochlorous, and sulphuric acids formed in the anode compartment. The process may be made continuous by flowing sea water through the cathode compartment. Specifications 450,309, 489,173, 556,622, 557,414, 654,706, [all in Group IV], 693,166, 720,002 and 721,161, [Group IV (a)], are referred to.
