Abstract

Vanadium is recovered from iron ore or slag by converting the iron and the vanadium into volatilizable chlorides with hydrochloric acid and separating the vanadium chloride from all or some of the iron chloride by or after distillation in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The ore or slag is preferably treated in a fluidized state with hydrogen chloride gas, as described in Specification 677,690, suitable temperatures being 150 DEG C. in the case of ore and 600-850 DEG C. in the case of slag. The distilled vapours may be condensed in two stages, the first at 150-180 DEG C. yielding dry iron chloride together with manganese chloride if present, and the second yielding an aqueous acidic solution of vanadium chloride; which may be evaporated or roasted to give vanadium pentoxide. Alternatively the distillate is condensed in one stage to yield an aqueous acidic solution of the mixed chlorides which on evaporation to dryness is converted into oxides. These may be separated by reconversion to chlorides and redistillation, or the mixture may be used as such for making ferro-vanadium. Alternatively the iron may be separated by treating the mixed chloride solution with an organic solvent, leaving vanadium and manganese which may be separated by redistillation.
