A windshield wiper comprises a flexible wiper blade supported by a flexible backing disposed along the back edge of the blade and a wiper arm pressure-distributing superstructure including a primary yoke and pivoted secondary yokes, wherein the connections between the ends of the secondary yokes and the backing permit of relative longitudinal movement and comprise grooves formed in the secondary yokes (or backing) by bending oppositely projecting ears thereon, in which grooves edges of the backing (or secondary yokes) engage. As shown in Fig. 2, the windscreen wiper comprises a flexible blade 5 embraced on each side by fingers 7 of a flexible backing 6 which is slidably connected to the ends of strap-like secondary yokes 10 (only one shown) which are rockably connected intermediate their ends to the ends of a channelled primary yoke 9 provided with a wiper arm attachment means (not shown). The four points of connection between the backing 6 and the ends of the secondary yokes 10 are facilitated by seats 15, Fig. 5, on the backing which receive the edges 16 of the secondary yokes. The seats are formed by turning upwardly and over, oppositely projecting ears 17 on the backing. In order to prevent longitudinal displacement of the blade and its backing from the pressure distributing frame formed by the primary and secondary yokes, a resiliently and upwardly urged detent 20 is provided at one point of connection between the backing and one secondary yoke. The detent passes through apertures 21 and 22 in the backing and secondary yoke respectively. Each end of the primary yoke 9 is provided with ears 13, Fig. 4, which are turned inwardly and upwardly to engage in an opening 12 in the secondary yoke 10. The yoke 9 also has a transverse rib 14 to facilitate a rocking connection between the primary and secondary yoke. The ears 13 and rib 14 may be on the secondary yoke and the opening in the primary yoke. Also a rivet may be provided in lieu of the transverse rib. In a modification, Fig. 8, the secondary yokes 10<SP>1</SP> are of channel form and the ends are provided with seats 15<SP>1</SP> which slidably receive lateral projections 16<SP>1</SP> on the blade backing 61. As in the first embodiment, one point, of connection is provided with a detent 20. In both forms the seats are in the form of opposed grooves and the secondary yokes can nest within the channelled primary yoke. Specification 737,589 is referred to.
