Abstract

737,191. Fishing reels. FEDERNFABRIK & APPARATEBAU AKT.-GES. Jan. 19, 1953 [Jan. 19, 1952], No. 1455/53. Class 48. A fishing reel has a drive for the flyer disc 14 including a two-speed gear mechanism, a rotatable sleeve 4 located around a spindle 21 and a ball bearing disposed between the spindle and the sleeve and serving to lock an axially displaceable driving shaft 11 in a selected position of the gear mechanism, the spindle having a reduced portion 22 which can be located opposite the balls 27, 28 of the ball bearing to permit displacement of the driving shaft 11 for changing gear. The driving shaft 11 is hollow having two coaxial longitudinal bores 17, 18. The inner end of the spindle is a sliding fit in the larger bore 17 and the outer end of the spindle extends through the narrower bore 18 to terminate in a knob 24. A spring 20 in the larger bore 18 presses the spindle outwardly. The balls 27, 28 of the ball bearing project through radial holes in the wall of the larger bore 17 to engage in one or other of two axially spaced grooves 9, 10 on the inner surface of the sleeve 4. When the spindle is pressed inwardly however the balls move inwardly on to the reduced portion 22 and disengage the grooves allowing the driving shaft to be moved axially. The driving shaft is rotated by a crank 32 secured to its outer end and carries on its inner end a main bevel gear 12 which in the position shown engages with a pinion 13 on a hollow shaft 15 to which the flyer disc 14 is connected. In the other position of the driving shaft it is disengaged from the pinion 13 and teeth 38 on the rear face of the bevel gear 12 engage teeth 36 at the centre of a second bevel gear 5 mounted on the end of the rotatable sleeve 4 and in constant mesh with a second pinion 16 on the shaft of the flyer disc. The sleeve 4 is rotatably mounted in a boss 3 on the reel casing and is prevented from moving axially by an arcuate piece 8 secured to the boss and engaging in a circumferential groove 6 in the sleeve. The flyer-disc shaft 15 rotates in a ball bearing detachably mounted in an opening 46 in the reel casing and comprising a bearing ring 42, balls 45 and a nut 43. The reel (not shown) is mounted on a shaft 39 which extends through the flyer-disc shaft 15 and which is reciprocated by an eccentric pin 47 on the main bevel gear 12 engaged in a slot in the enlarged end 48 of the reel shaft. A ratchet mechanism for preventing rotation of the flyer disc in the line-unwinding sense comprises a spring-urged pin 50 mounted on a bush 49 in the casing and engaging a ratchet wheel 53 on the rear of the second bevel gear 5. The pin 50 may be retained out of engagement with the ratchet wheel by a small pin projecting from the pin 50 and adapted to be moved up an oblique surface of the bush 49 to rest on a higher surface thereof.
