Abstract
737,096. Microphones. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION. Sept. 22, 1953 [Sept. 30, 1952], No. 24513/52. Class 40 (4). A pressure-gradient microphone has a resonant cavity on each side of the vibratory element designed to raise the cut-off frequency and reduce the response at the normal resonant frequency. A ribbon microphone, Figs. 1, 2, has a horse-shoe magnet enclosing a resonant cavity 15, the magnet being apertured at 16 to provide a short length of path between the front and back of the ribbon. The microphone also has tapered pole pieces 11 with a second resonant cavity on one side of the ribbon defined by a silk gauze 17 and an open rectangular frame 21, the path between the front and back of the ribbon being not materially lengthened. A second silk gauze 18 helps to flatten the response. The microphone is enclosed in a casing, Fig. 3, with a frame 22 to fit the user's face and breath screens 24, 27 spaced from the casing. In a modification, Fig. 6, a moving-coil microphone has a pot magnet 34, the cavity 39 below the diaphragm 37 connecting to atmosphere through apertures 40 while a further resonant cavity 41 is provided above the diaphragm. Reference is made to Specification 429,307, as representative of the prior state of the art.
