Abstract

736,784. Packaging-machines. DOW CORNING CORPORATION. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 10, 1951], No. 5359/52. Class 94 (1). Books of treated tissues for cleaning and polishing eyeglasses are formed by folding an elongated pad of tissues along a longitudinal centre line, inserting the folded pad in a piece of cover stock partially bent along two lines to form a multiple-book sub-assembly, clamping the subassembly resiliently in a heated die, inserting a staple in each book-wide section of the assembly and cutting the assembly into separate books, the stapling and cutting operations being performed while the assembly is held under heat and pressure. As shown, pads of treated tissues produced by the machine described in Specification 736,840, are folded by the operator and inserted in covers produced by the machine described in Specification 736,841 to form assemblies M, Fig. 3, which are placed in succession in dies 174 carried by a frame N mounted on a shaft 172 which is rotated in 120 degrees steps by Geneva mechanism to carry each assembly from a loading station O, Figs. 1 and 8, to a stapling station P and through a cutting station Q to an unloading station R, the completed books, Fig. 10, falling on to a delivery conveyer S. The frame is located during each dwell by a pin 223 which enters notches 222 in a plate 221 on the shaft 172 under the action of a spring 224 and is withdrawn at the commencement of each step by linkage operated by a cam 225. Each die, Figs. 5 and 7, comprises a plate 175, fitted with stapling anvils 188, a long hinged cover 176 and a short hinged cover 177 formed with notches 187 for the reception of the heads of the staplers 226, the covers being heated by electrical resistances 180 and the plate and covers being formed with slots 181 for the reception of spaced disc cutters carried by a continuouslydriven shaft 243 at station Q. The book assemblies are located in the dies by pins 182, 183 which project upwardly from the plate through elongated slots 184, 185 in the covers and by shoulders 186 on the cover 176. The hinge pins 178, 179 of the covers are mounted in end brackets 190 carried by the frame and carry operating yokes 193 which embrace arms 191 freely pivoted on the pins and fitted with cam-follower rollers 192, a spring 196 being interposed between each yoke and arm. The rollers on the arms of the cover 176 engage cam rings 198 adjustably secured to the fixed frame of the machine, and the rollers on the arms of the cover 177 engage similarly arranged cam rings 199. At the loading station O, both covers are in the open position to allow an assembly M to be placed on the plate 175, and as the die moves to station P, the rollers 192 ride up ramps 209, 210 onto the raised portions of the cam rings, thus closing the covers in succession. At station P the heads of the staplers descend and insert a staple in each book section, and as the die moves through station Q the assembly is cut into ten books by the cutting discs. As the die approaches station R, the rollers on the arms of the cover 176 ride down ramps 203 on to depressed portions of the cams 198, whereby the cover is partially opened, and during movement from station R to station O the rollers ride down further ramps 205 on to lower depressed portions 206 to allow the cover to open fully. Shortly afterwards, the rollers on the arms of the cover 177 ride down ramps 207 on to depressed portions of the cams 199, whereby that cover is opened to allow the completed books to fall on to the conveyer S.
