Abstract

736,582. Valve gear. RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Jan. 31,1952 [Jan. 31, 1951], No. 2391/51. Class 7(6). A valve-actuating cam is designed to produce a lift curve built up of two sine or cosine waves of which the ratio of the amplitude of the wave of longer wavelength to that of the wave of shorter wavelength is less than 3 to 1, for example 2À25 to 1, and which are superimposed so that the point of maximum valve lift is a point at which the waves are in opposite phase at maximum amplitude. The lift curve is represented generally by the equation E= A cos BF + C cos DF where 3C>A and D>B, F representing cam angle to a convenient scale. The lift curve shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification is built up of two superimposed cosine waves having amplitudes in the ratio of 1À5 to 1 and the portion used in forming the cam profile is the flat-topped portion extending from 76 degrees to 284 degrees. A constant velocity ramp portion may be provided at each end of the lift portion of the cam. Specification 573,294 is referred to.
