Abstract

An active alumina gel is prepared by precipitating with carbon dioxide an aluminate solution whose molar ratio of Na2O to M2O5 is not greater than 1.2. The alumina content of the solution should be at most 15, preferably 8 gm. per litre. The temperature of precipitation should be 10-15 DEG C. and the time of precipitation at most 60 minutes. The precipitate is dried under decreased pressure at a temperature not exceeding 70 DEG C. to a water content of at least 40 per cent.
