Abstract

735,637. Printing processes. MURRAY, G. L. June 12, 1952 [June 13, 1951], No. 13968/51. Class 100 (2). For the printing or decoration of ceramic or other ware the colour is transferred from an engraved, litho, or etched plate 22 to the article 23 to be printed by a resilient pad 20, having a portion of generally parabolic shape, which is first pressed against the engraved or etched plate to extract the colour therefrom and then against the article to cause the design or other matter to be printed thereon. The article to be printed may be carried in a resilient support 25 so that equal pressures may be maintained on both sides. The pad 20 is attached to a base-plate 21 and is of a resilience such that it will conform to the shape of the plate 22 and article 23. The pad is a paraboloid of circular oval, or rectangular cross-section and composed of organic, vegetable, or mineral jelly, e.g. gelatine or gelatine-based material. The pad may also be made of laminations of different resilience, and/or may comprise a wider portion extending from the paraboloidal portion towards its base and into which the paraboloidal portion emerges. The pad may be surrounded by a pressure ring in the region of the base-plate to prevent swelling of the pad during pressing near the base-plate. The pressure ring may carry stops to limit the position of maximum pressure. The pad may also be arranged to slide in a fixed cylindrical guide. Ceramic articles are preferably printed before the final glazing process.
