Abstract

The invention comprises tri-alkali metal triiodo ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid dihydrates of the formula M3(C10H12N2O8I).I2. 2H2O wherein M is an alkali metal. They may be prepared by adding iodine in at least equimolar amount to a concentrated aqueous solution of a tetra-alkali metal salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and crystallizing out the reaction product. Thus, one mol. of iodine is added to a stirred warm concentrated aqueous solution of one mol. of tetra-sodium ethylene diamine tetra-acetate and the solution allowed to cool. The resulting crystalline tri-sodium triiodo salt is filtered off and a further quantity of the salt obtained by diluting the filtrate with methanol. The tetra-sodium salt used as reactant may be replaced by the tetra-potassium, lithium, rubidium or cesium salt or by mixed alkali-metal salts, e.g. the di-sodium di-potassium salt. The products have germicidal and fungicidal properties and form metal complexes; they may be used in water purification (see Group VI).ALSO:Tri-alkali metal tri-iodo ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid di-hydrates of the formula M3(C10H12N2O8I).I2.2H2O wherein M is an alkali metal are used, suitably in tablet form, for the purification of water for the purpose of rendering it free of bacteria. The preparation of the salts is described (see Group IV (b)). Aqueous solutions may be applied to the human skin.
