[Also in Group XXXII] A fastening for a road vehicle bonnet cover, boot cover or the like comprises the combination of a striker a adapted to be mounted on the bonnet cover or like part, a pivoted latch d having a pair of notches i, j at one side adapted for engagement by the striker in two successive positions, resilient means e urging the latch in a direction to engage the notches with the striker, additional resilient means for imparting an initial opening movement to the bonnet cover and means operable from a distant point whereby the latch can be moved only sufficiently to disengage one of the notches j from the striker and thereby permit the striker to move into engagement with the other notch i under the action of the additional resilient means, the disengagement of the other notch i from the striker being effected through the opening beneath the bonnet cover. As shown the latch d is mounted in a housing c so as to extend through an open side, the latch having a square section boss f between which and the walls of a substantially square recess g, are positioned the resilient means e consisting of four cylindrical rubber members forming with the boss f and recess, a pivotal bearing for the latch. The upper part of the latch has an inclined portion h engaged by the striker when it is moved downwardly to move the latch from its path. The rubber cylinders e are distorted by this movement of the latch and restore it to its position when the striker has passed, to latch the striker in position. The latch is released from a distance by a flexible wire p, the movement of which is limited so that when the striker is released by the notch it becomes engaged by the notch i. The striker is raised to the notch i by a keeper k which is pivotally mounted and resiliently loaded in the same way as the latch. Movement of the striker from notch j to notch i allows sufficient movement of the bonnet to enable a hand to be inserted to release the striker from notch i. In a modification the keeper is omitted and a helical spring is added which surmounts the striker and bears on a plate also carried by the striker. This plate, when the striker is engaged by the latch, bears on the top of the latch casing-with the spring compressed. Specification 652,266, [Group XXXII], is referred to.
