Abstract

A composition bondable to glass when cured in the presence of a peroxy catalyst, comprises an unsaturated alkyd resin of acid number 5 to 100, an ethylenic monomer, and a silane selected from vinylalkoxysilanes, vinyl-2-chloroalkoxysilanes in which each alkoxy group contains from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, vinylallyloxysilanes, vinylacyloxysilanes and the reaction products of vinylchlorosilanes with saturated aliphatic dihydric alcohols. Specified ethylenic monomers are styrene, diallyl phthalate and triallyl cyanurate. Silanes mentioned are vinyltriethoxysilane, vinyltripropoxysilane, vinyltributoxysilane, divinyldiethoxysilane, trivinylethoxysilane, vinyltriallyloxysilane, vinyltris - (2 - chloroethoxy) silane, divinylbis - (2 - chloroethoxy) silane, vinyltriacetoxysilane, and the reaction product of vinyltrichlorosilane, divinyldichlorosilane, or trivinylchlorosilane with ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, or dipropylene glycol. The unsaturated alkyd resin is made from a mixture comprising an alpha, beta-dicarboxylic acid and a glycol, e.g. by condensing maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and propylene glycol, or phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride or tetrachlorphthalic anhydride, or the resins described in Specifications 540,168 and 540,169. Specified peroxy compounds are t.-butylhydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide, para-menthanehydroperoxide, di-t-butyl diperoxyphthalate, t-butyl peroxyacetate, di-t-butyl peroxide, dibenzyl peroxide, methylethyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, parachlorobenzoyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, and lauroyl peroxide. The glass may be in the form of sheets, chopped glass fibres, fibres oriented in one direction, fabrics, or randomly arranged glass fibres in the form of mats.
