Abstract

734,708. Space charge wave tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES., [formerly TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE]. Feb. 24, 1953 [Feb. 25, 1952], No. 5087/53. Class 39 (1). In a space charge wave amplifier utilizing two separate electron beams having different average velocities the output wave retarder 6 is so dimensioned and maintained at such a potential as to function as a travelling wave amplifier. It is shown that the wave retarder 6 must be at a relatively high positive potential, e.g. 2000 volts, as compared with say 300 volts on the input circuit 4 and 50 volts difference between th cathode voltages, the voltage of K1 being taken as zero potential; also, 6 must be longer than 4. The beams 1, 2 may be parallel or concentric. Wave reflections may be minimized by wedge-shaped rods 8, 9 of ceramic loss material, and the diameters of the helices 4, 6 may be increased, preferably gradually, at their facing ends. The pitch of the output helix 6 may be made smaller at the beam entry point than elsewhere. The helices may be replaced by other wave-retarding " networks." Specification 664,253 is referred to.
