Abstract

734,366. Rotary engines. HUGHES, J. H. Jan. 14, 1954 [Jan. 14, 1953], No. 1108/53. Class 110 (2). A rotary engine comprises a high-pressure chamber 13, Fig. 2, and a low-pressure chamber 16, Fig. 3, each being substantially elliptical in cross-section and containing a cylindrical rotor with a number of outwardly sliding vanes 34, 39, the two rotors being coupled together for synchronous rotation. Between these two chambers is connected a third chamber or receiver 14, Fig. 1. The two rotors may be mounted on a common shaft 21, as in Fig. 1. The charge enters the high-pressure chamber through a port 29, from a carburetter, is compressed and then fired by a sparking-plug 30, the fired charge leaving by port 31. The expanding gases pass through the receiver 14 and then through a port 44 into one of the spaces 37 in the low-pressure chamber where they drive a vane 39, and are then exhausted through a port 45. Vanes 34 slide in radial grooves 33, their inner ends following a cam contour 35, and they may be urged outwards by springs 48. Vanes 39 slide in grooves 38 which are disposed tangentially to a circle concentric of the axis of the rotor 36, and pointing in the direction of rotation of said rotor. Vanes 39 are urged out wards by springs 40. Each vane 34, 39 may be laminated each lamination sliding on another, contain rollers, or be divided longitudinally along a plane not parallel to. the edges of the vane vrhereby the portions of the vane so formed may slide on each other and thereby adjust the width of the vane. An annular groove 59 may be formed around the rotor 24 in the highpressure chamber to increase the volume of compression space 27. The end plate, 12 or 15, of the chamber 13 or 16 may contain a metal sealing ring 46, and spring 47. The high-pressure chamber may be provided with a water-cooling jacket. The rotors may be lubricated by oil passing in through port 63 and out again by port 64.
