734,166. Producing titanium or zirconium. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 28, 1953 [Oct. 20, 1952], No. 26643/53. Class 82 (1). [Also in Group XII] Titanium or zirconium is produced by burning magnesium, in particulate form, at a smouldering rate in an atmosphere of the vapour of titanium or zirconium halide. In the form of apparatus shown for producing titanium sponge, a reaction vessel 17 heated by a furnace 18 is filled with titanium tetrachloride vapour from a receptacle 38 and magnesium particles from a hopper 34 are fed from a pipe 36 on to a hollow disc 15, the disc being rotated by a hollow shaft 16 driven by an electric motor 25. Titanium tetrachloride vapour may be prevented from entering the pipe 36 by introducing an inert gas, e.g. argon, or helium, at 87. The furnace temperature, the rate of feed of the magnesium particles and the rate of cooling of the disc 15- by air from a pipe 29-are adjusted so that the train 80 of particles on the disc smoulders along its length at the same rate as the rate of rotation of the disc and stationary zones of action 81-86 are formed on the disc ; these are trainforming, preheating, ignition, smouldering, drainage and sponge-removal zones respectively. The smouldering of the magnesium in zone 84 reduces the titanium tetrachloride leaving sponge titanium on the disc, from which magnesium chloride drains in the zone 85. The titanium sponge is scraped from the disc by a reciprocating air-cooled scraper 64 and falls into the magnesium chloride drainage pool 52 from where it is carried by a screw conveyer 45 to an air-tight vessel 62. The temperature of the disc, which may be replaced by a cone or cylinder revolving about its axis, is preferably 708-850‹ C. Another form of apparatus in which the magnesium feed hopper is moved along above a flat cooled plate is also shown diagrammatically.
