Abstract

734,091. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. June 29,1953 [July 4, 1952], No. 16933/52. Class 110 (3). In a debris guard for the air intake duct of a gas turbine engine, a grid portion is pivotally supported adjacent an edge thereof to move. between its operative and inoperative positions so that in each position of the grid portion, the line of action of the load on the grid portion due to the airflow in the air intake duct passes through or close to the corresponding instantaneous centre of rotation of the grid portion at least over a major part of the travel of the grid portion between its operative and inoperative positions. In Fig. 1, the outer end of the grid portion 10 is mounted on a roller 13 which is moved in guides 14 parallel to the direction of the airflow 15 by means of a ram 11a in a cylinder 11. The grid is connected by a link 17 to a fixed part of the structure at 19. The centre of pressure of the grid is indicated at 16. In this embodiment, the line of action of the load due to the airflow passes through the instantaneous centre of rotation at each position. In Fig. 2, the grid is connected to the fixed structure by a link 20 connected at 22 to an offset portion of the grid. In Fig. 3, the offset portion 24 of the grid carries a roller 23 which is constrained to move in the direction 25a. The dimensions may be such that the load due to the airflow operates to assist movement of the grid towards its operative position and towards its retracted position, the line of action of the load due to the airflow passing through the instantaneous centre of rotation at an intermediate position. The air intake shown in Fig. 4 is annular and the grid portions 34 comprise portions of the annulus and together form a frusto-conical surface. The grid portions are constructed in accordance with the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 and a ram 48, lug 53 and link 52 are fitted at each end of the arcuate outer edge of each grid portion. The grid comprises aerofoil slats 39 secured to a frame. Specification 668,638 is referred to.
