Abstract

Articles having a coating of pure chromium and intended to be used under conditions such that oxidation of the chromium cannot occur, are heated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to such an extent that a layer of chromic oxide is formed on the pure chromium coating. The atmosphere may be of air enriched with oxygen, ozone or substances forming oxygen at high temperatures, e.g. hydrogen peroxide. Heating may be by electrical resistance or high-frequency induction; the latter may be used for articles coated by true-to-size hard chrome plating. The treatment of turbine blades and bearing surfaces of machine parts such as cylinder liners and piston-rings is referred to.
