Abstract
733,745. Claw clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES. Aug. 25, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 23435/53. Class 80 (2). A positive balk for a single or double positive clutch 3, 9, frictionally synchronized by a cone 10, comprises a stop-peg 14, slidable radially between guides 13 on the freely rotatable cone 10, and having its opposite ends cylindrically curved in planes at right-angles, so that, under the pre-synchronous drag-torque of the cone 10, its inner end 15 rides radially up a curved surface 17 on an inner member 5 splined on the shaft 1, Fig. 2 position, whereby its outer end 16 obstructs axial movement of a curved abutment 20 in the outer positive clutch sleeve 9 splined on the shaft member 5. Attainment of synchronism causes axial clutch-engaging thrust to push the stop peg 14 inwards, releasing the clutch sleeve 9 for positive engagement with the clutch teeth 3 of a freely-mounted wheel 2. The abutment 20 may, as shown, be formed by a spline-gap in the clutch-sleeve 9. A spring-ball 23 locates the disengaged position, and the stop-peg 14 may be outwardly spring-loaded. The synchronizing cone 10 is retained on the shaft-member 5 by a circlip 11 and its free relative circumferential movement is limited by clearance engagement of the balk-peg guides 13 in a recess 18 in the shaft-member 5. In the double-clutch form, Figs. 7 and 8, not shown, separate synchronizing cones span a central rib on the shaft member and are held together by bolts.
