A rod, for proving a bore hole, is formed of a number of interconnected, longitudinally staggered, half-round sections 1a, each section having lugs 4 near one end, complementarily shaped lugs 3 between the ends, and a partspherical spigot 5 at the other end. A section 1a, either a half-round tube or a rod, is assembled to a preceding section by engaging the spigot 5 in the partly-assembled rod and then sliding the section laterally of the central dividing plane of the rod until the lugs 3 thereon engage the lugs 4 of the previously assembled section.
