Abstract

733,321. Jet propulsion plant. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, Inc. May 7, 1953, No. 12744/53. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XXI and XXXIII] Guiding vanes for a rocket motor are constructed in laminar form, the inner layer 5 being of higher tensile strength than the outer layers 6. Preferably the layer 5, Fig. 4, is molybdenum and the outer layers copper, so that the vane is eroded by the hot gases from the propellant, the copper being eroded more rapidly than the molybdenum leaves a sharp leading edge 7 and streamline surfaces 8. Fig. 5 shows a vane constructed of several layers, the innermost layer 10 being molyb. denum or steel and the succeeding layers 11, 12, 13, 14 being copper, chromium, molybdenum and copper. In a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the inner layer has a nose portion of increased sectional thickness which forms the leading edge of the vane. A layer of chromium may cover this vane, which may also be given a coating of ceramic material. Fig. 7 shows a modified vane 19 having an insert 20 of molybdenum fastened to the copper portion 21 by copper rivets 22. The insert 20 extends only partway along the vane. The leading edge of this insert may be cut away. On firing a rocket fitted with these vanes, the molybdenum and copper are consumed until the rivets 22 collapse, when the remainder of the insert falls away. The vanes may have a tongue portion 25, Fig. 11, which fits in a groove 29 in holders 26 on the motor casing 30 of rocket 31, Fig. 12. The rocket has fixed control surfaces 32, 33 and movable control surfaces 34, 35 which are interconnected with guide mechanisms. The vanes 19 are interconnected through holders 26 with shafts 36 attached to the movable control surfaces. Instead of molybdenum, the core of the vane may be made of tungsten, chromium, alloys or metallic carbides or oxides thereof, the outer layers being of copper, aluminium, silver, or alloys thereof, or wood, laminated phenolic resin - impregnated glass, graphite, or metallic carbides or oxides. These materials may be coated with other substances such as chromium to control the rate of burning.
