[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] In a multi-plate friction dynamometer, loaded by adjustable springs 25 or by fluid pressure, the outer plates 6 have outwardly projecting tangs 12 ... 20 which engage between longitudinal ribs 21, 22 in the outer member 7 and the circumferential dimensions of which are in stepped relation from one end of the set to the other, so that, on reversal of the direction of rotation, these outer plates come into effective operation in succession so as to avoid shocks. As shown, the edges of the ribs 21,22 are parallel and the tang 12 of the end plate engages without play therebetween, but these edges may also be stepped or may be inclined.
