733,237. Slitting nuts. GARDNER, J. W. Dec. 30, 1952, No. 32964/52. Class 58. In a machine for slitting the skins of nuts, the nuts 82, e.g. almonds, are fed end to end, along V-shaped troughs in a hopper 20, into narrow gaps between wheels 16 mounted on shafts 12 and their skins are slit by knives 46 at the sides of the gaps as the nuts are carried through by the rotating wheels, which may be provided' with resilient annular cushions 18, e.g. of sponge rubber. The hopper may be vibrated by an electromagnetic vibrator 34, 36. The knives may be detachably mounted on pivoted arms 42, pairs of which may be urged towards each other by a spring 54. The shafts may be connected by gears 14.
