Abstract

732,952. Ammunition projectiles and projectile fuzes. SOC. ANON. BELGE DE MECANIQUE ET D'ARMEMENT. Sept. 8, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 24860/53. Class 9(1). A fin-stabilised bomb containing a hollow charge and adapted to be dropped from aircraft is provided with a percussion fuze for initiation of a detonator to ignite the charge, the detonator being held away from the charge by locking means released by centrifugal force during fall of the bomb to allow the detonator to move to the armed position. Fig. 1 shows a bomb having a percussion fuze 1 mounted in a ballistic cap 2, which is secured in a thin-walled casing 3 housing a cast or compressed hollow charge 4 of hexogen or penthrite and a primary charge 5. A conical metal liner 6 for the hollow charge has an opening at its apex into which extends a tube 18 opening into a passage leading to a detonator 7. The detonator is housed in a carrier 8 which is screwed into a member 10 on to which the bomb-tail is screwed. The detonator is locked in the carrier by two semicylindrical inertia blocks 13, Fig. 3, bearing against a tubular element 14 extending into the carrier 8. The element 14 has a flared axial passage 15 and the arms of a flat spring 16 extend into grooves in the blocks 13 to hold them in position. Attached to the tail 9 are stabilising fins 19 which are connected at the rear by a ring 20. The fins are inclined to the axis of the bomb, so that as it falls it rotates and the resultant centrifugal force acting on the blocks 13 causes them to move outwards and thus release the detonator, which then moves forwards to arm the bomb. The blocks may also be held by spiral springs extending into recesses in the blocks, which are guided by slides projecting into grooves in the member 10. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the detonator carrier 8c is provided with a boss 22 over which are hooked two arms 23, 24 mounted on a pivot 25 and connected at their outer ends, which carry inertia blocks 26, 27, by a spring 28. The tail tube is closed by a disc 29.
