Abstract

731,932. Making envelopes. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. April 7, 1953 [April 10, 1952], No. 9225/52. Class 94 (2). [Also in Group XV] In an apparatus for making self-sealing, packet type envelopes the blanks B are withdrawn singly through a slot 6 in the plate 1 by suction rollers 3, 4, and friction roller 5, which also fold the blank to form the narrow side flap 8, Fig. 7. Racing rollers 10 feed the blank to rollers 11 carrying stops 12 which register the blank with respect to printing and impression cylinders 13, 14 respectively, and rollers 17a forward the blank to creasing rollers 18, 19, to form the fold line 21 of the side flap 16, and the fold lines 22 and 23 of the end closures. The blank is provided with stripes of adhesive 28, 29, by gumming roller 24 and is carried between rollers 30, 31 to a folder plate 33, the fold.edge 7 of the blank coming against stops 34 beneath a guide grid 36, and suction holes in the roller 30 seizing the blank along the fold line 21 to draw it between the rollers 30 and 32. Fold patters 35, which are raised when the blank is fed against the stops 34, descend, and the stops 34 move forward, to urge the blank between the rollers 30 and 32. The folded blank is then passed by rollers 40, 40a, with the edge 21 leading, to a plough which folds over the bottom closure flap 38, and through rollers 41, 46, to endless conveyer bands 47 which carry the envelope round a roller 48, where stripes of self-sealing adhesive are applied by rollers 43 to the sealing flap and the adjoining portion of the back of the envelope. The rollers 43 are mounted on pivoted levers controlled by a cam rotating with the roller 48, whereby they are removed from the envelope when the stripes are completed. Mechanical means also are provided for lifting the rollers 43 when the machine stops. Endless conveyer bands 47, 59a, feed the envelopes around a roller 60 to rollers 61, 62, and by means of a reciprocating roller 74, and endless conveyer bands 73a, passing round rollers 62, 73, the envelopes are fed into a drying conveyer 63 provided with gripper fingers 69. The envelopes are removed from the parted gripper fingers at 76 by pushers 77, and are fed by a cam-operated suction tube 79 through rollers 80 to a stacking and counting cylinder 81.
