Abstract

The oxidation of secondary alcohols in the liquid phase with gaseous oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide is effected in the presence of a "sequestrative hydrogen peroxide stabilizer", i.e. a compound, other than a compound of boron, which inactivates substances which tend to catalyse the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Compounds specified are: organic cyanides, alpha-hydroxyquinoline, acetanilide, benzoic acid, alpha-benzoyloxy-beta-dimethyl-aminobutyrine acid, glycerine phenyl ether, thiourea, sodium salicylate, thymol, gum arabic, albumin, uric acid, guaiacol, phosphatides, acetyl glycol, monoacetyl glycol ether, sodium benzenesulphonate, hexamethylenetetramine, alkali metal salts of the oxy-acids of tin, antimony, silicon and aluminium and the hydrous oxides of these elements, and the oxyacids of phosphorus and alkali metal salts thereof. The presence of the stabilizer may be ensured by rinsing the reaction vessel with a solution of the stabilizer and additional stabilizer may also be added to the alcohol. In a continuous process the stabilizer may be added continuously or intermittently to the alcohol either in the reaction vessel or being fed thereto. Alcohols specified are isopropyl alcohol, secondary butyl alcohol, the secondary amyl alcohols, cyclohexyl alcohol, 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl alcohol, ethyl allyl carbinol, 2-cyclohexene-1-o1 and 1-phenylethanol. Free radical initiators may be employed. The oxidation may be carried out at 70-160 DEG C., preferably 90-140 DEG C.
