Abstract
730,911. Forming laps of glass fibres. AKTIEBOLAGET TUDOR. Jan. 29, 1953 [Jan. 30, 1952], No. 2650/53. Classes 120(1) and 120(3). [Also in Group VIII] Separators or diaphragms for electric cells comprising at least a first layer of glass fibres and a second layer are manufactured by spraying glass fibres, formed by feeding a glass thread across a stream of hot gas, onto the second layer in the form of a sheet. The second layer may be a glass wool mat, microporous rubber, or thermoplastic synthetic resinous material. A band of glass wool mat 2 consisting of coarse fibres, which may be bonded, is fed from roll 1 round guide rolls 3, 4 past a spraying device. The spraying device has a furnace 7 connected to a compressor and feed rolls 9a, 9b and guide member 10 for leading glass thread 11 across beam 8 of hot air from furnace 7, so that thread 11 is blown out into fine fibres which settle and form a layer on band 2. Water cooled plate 13 is provided behind band 2. Thermoplastic binding medium, which may be in powder form, e.g. starch, or binding medium dissolved in water may be supplied simultaneously through another spray jet 12 onto band 2 to increase adherence of the fibres, Powdered wood or other substances which improve the properties of the electric cell may also be sprayed through jet 12 or an additional jet. The coated band 2 is cooled by air suction through funnel 14 the air being distributed by screen 15, and passes round guide roll 5 in contact with driven roll 16, which ensures constant speed of movement of the band and compresses the sprayed layer of glass fibres, to roll 6. The separators are then cut from the band. In an alternative apparatus the glass fibres are sprayed between two glass wool mats to form an interlayer. The band may be passed stepwise through the spraying zone.
