Abstract

<PICT:0730501/IV (a)/1> In order to obtain a package of yarn of a synthetic linear polyamide having a predetermined final tenacity and a predetermined final breaking elongation measured on the yarn as it is unwound from the package, a polyamide yarn is subjected to cold-drawing at substantially room temperature between a cold low-speed advancing device and a high-speed advancing device a p part at least of which is heated to a temperature substantially comprised between 80 DEG and 40 DEG C. below the melting point of the polyamide, the drawing ratio, defined by the ratio of the linear speeds of the two advancing devices, being only slightly higher than the drawing ratio corresponding to the final tenacity and breaking elongation after packaging. The polyamide may be that obtained by polycondensation of amino-caproic acid. As shown, the yarn is cold drawn as it passes between the two roller systems 11, 12. The main roller 14, or both rollers, of the system 12 is heated, e.g. by means of electrical resistances, to a temperature which, in the case of a polyamide from amino-caproic acid, may be 170 DEG C. If a 30 denier, 10 filament yarn of a final tenacity of 4.5 grams per denier and a breaking elongation of 20 per cent, corresponding to a final drawing ratio of 380 per cent, is required, the actual drawing ratio imparted by the roller systems 11, 12 should be made slightly higher than 380 per cent, e.g. 383 per cent, the excess being adjusted according to the nature of the polyamide, the characteristics of the yarn, the temperature of the hot roller and the number of times the yarn is wrapped about that roller. Instead of the roller systems 11, 12, systems of thread-advancing cages, arranged eccentrically or askew or interdigitating with respect to one another, may be provided for stretching the yarn.
