Abstract
729,553. Poultry batteries. GLEED, C. V. May 8, 1953 [Feb. 8, 1952], No. 3382/52. Class 5 (2). A poultry battery comprises rows of cages arranged in back-to-back tiers with a central corridor in which are located food-troughs 3 the food being supplied to the troughs from a hopper 4 and circulated continuously through them by chains 6 and finally fed back to the hopper 4 by an elevator 7. The cages, Fig. 9, comprise wire frames 26 connected together by hooks 31, 34 and eyes 30 and supported above droppings-trays 23 over which sweep the blades of reciprocating-scraper conveyers, Fig. 8 (not shown). The food passes from the end of each trough 3 to the lower trough through a funnel 5, 5a, 5b and is finally fed into the base of the screw elevator 7, the chains 6 and elevator 7 being driven by an electric motor 21. The cage-floors 37 slope outwardly so that eggs will roll on to rubber-belt conveyers 14 passing along the outsides of the cages. The belts discharge into an arcuate shoot 15 feeding a further shoot 16 containing flaps 19, spring- loaded to reduce the rate of travel of the eggs in their descent to a sponge-rubber lined receptacle. A water-pipe 10 having nipples 12 at intervals is mounted above each cage adjacent to the food-trough.
