729,142. Gauging toothed gears. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. May 19, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12795/52. Class 106 (2). An apparatus, Fig. 2, for determining the distance TD between the plane containing the outside diameter of a bevel gear 22 and a gauging surface 23 parallel to that plane, for example on the side remote from the apex of the gear, comprises a base plate 12, a gear support 14 extending from the base with its axis normal to the base and adapted to support the gear 22 axially, and a gauging plane 11 inclined to the axis of the support and intersecting a reference plane 21 normal to the axis of the support 14 at a point in the axis of the support. For gears of diameter D, and knowing the angle O, the height of the plane containing the outside diameter of the bevel wheel 22 above the reference plane 21 can be calculated. To check the position of the surface 23, a dial gauge 18, Fig. 1, resting on the surface 21 is set to this calculated height plus the theoretically desired height TD. Any variation in the actual height TD from the desired height TD is then indicated by the dial gauge. Preferably, the angle O is such that the height of the plane containing the outside diameter of the bevel wheel 22 above the reference plane 21 is D, the diameter of the wheel under test, i.e. the tangent of the angle O is ¢.
