728,300. Continuous-casting machines. BRENNAN, J. B. June 12, 1952 [Oct. 30, 1951], No. 14846/52. Class 83 (1). In apparatus for the continuous casting of rod, wire or strip, the mould passage passes successively through a heated and a cooled zone and part of the mould wall is defined by movable means travelling with the metal. The mould passage is defined by a grooved wheel 8 rotating in an arcuate opening in a fixed member comprising an upper part 1 heated by a high-frequency coil 11 and incorporating a storage chamber for the molten metal 2 and a lower part 12 cooled by water flowing in a passage 18. Cooling sprays may assist the final cooling of the casting 3 which is then wound on a spool 17. In order further to reduce friction, part of the cooling zone may.be formed by a moving belt 49 passing over a cooled guide shoe 53. A stripper 55 may also be provided. The whole apparatus, or a part thereof, may be enclosed in a vacuum chamber or surrounded by an inert atmosphere. Pressure may be exerted on the molten metal in the storage chamber.
