Abstract

<PICT:0726843/III/1> In an apparatus of conventional type for contacting gas with a bed of fluidized solid particles and wherein solid entrained in the exit gas is separated by a cyclone 30 and returned to the bed through a dip leg 34, the latter terminates in an open-topped seal pot 35 placed above the main fluid bed and supplied with aerating gas through a pipe 36. The depth of the seal pot below the mouth of the dip leg is at least 2.5 and preferably 3.5-6 times its diameter. If two or more cyclones are used in series, as shown on the left of Fig. 1, the invention is applied at least to the final one. According to another feature, relatively coarse solid from a hopper 60 is suspended in the aerating gas so that it mingles with the fines in the seal pot, which, in this case, need not have the stated relative dimensions. In a modification, this coarse solid is aspirated into line 36 from the main fluid bed through a branch line (not shown).
