Abstract

726,401. Mullers. WESTIN, K. G. Sept. 1, 1953 [Sept. 11, 1952], No. 24154/53. Class 59. A muller for foundry sand comprises a drum 1 having a feed opening 15a at one end for the sand and a discharge opening at the other end, and a rotary shaft 13 to support a plurality of crushing elements 17 and scraping elements 19 which are at different axial positions throughout the drum and act on the sand at the wall of the drum during rotation of the shaft. An electric motor 11 drives the shaft 13 through a worm gear or the like 12 and effects feed of the sand by a worm conveyer 14. Each mulling and scraping unit has a hub 21 to support diametrically-opposed mulling wheels 17 and scoop scrapers 19, and three units are arranged along the shaft, with the wheels of adjacent units offset from each other by about 60 degrees. The wheels are mounted loosely on the cranked ends of their supporting arms 18 or on eccentrics on the cranked ends so as to be applied resiliently against the sand by centrifugal force. Vanes 19a may also be provided and so arranged with the scoops 19 that the entire length of the drum may be scraped. The rate of feed of the sand along the drum can also be controlled by regulation of the angle of the scoops 19 and the vanes 19a which may be arranged to return the sand for further treatment. The feed may also be assisted by inclining the drum at an angle up to 15 degrees to the horizontal. This may be effected by pivoting a frame 3, 4, supporting the drum, about bolts 5a, by means of a screw, hydraulic or pneumatic, jack 9. The drum may have a wear-resistant lining, e.g. of rubber, and at least one access door which may be operated by a pneumatic or hydraulic jack. A current of air may be passed through the drum preferably from an inlet 23 to an outlet 24, to cool the sand and remove entrained dust, and water may be introduced through nozzles adjacent the inlet end of the drum to moisten the sand. The drum may be of conical form.
