Abstract

726,364. Sizing paper pulp &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 4, 1953 [July 17, 1952], No. 15403/53. Class 96. Paper pulp &c., e.g. ground wood, sodasulphite, or Kraft pulp, is sized at the beater with an aqueous colloidal dispersion of submicroscopic solid particles of polyethylene, the pH value being maintained at 5.0 to 8.5, and 0.1 to 5.0 per cent of polymer being coagulated on to the pulp fibres. The polymer may be obtained by emulsion polymerization; it may be dispersed by potassium laurate, sodium stearate, -palmitate, -fatty alcohol sulphates, or -sulphosuccinate, triethanol ammonium stearate, ammonium perfluorocarboxylates, or diacyl peroxides, or alkali metal or ammonium persulphates, -perborates, or -percarbonates. It may be used together with a sodium naphthalene sulphonate formaldehyde condensation product, urea-formaldehyde resin, or carbonate filler.
