Abstract

726,355. Casting-machines. GRIFFIN WHEEL CO. April 21, 1953, No. 10946/53. Addition to 718,744. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). In casting, particularly wheels, molten metal from a reservoir is forced through a tube and into a gate in the bottom of a mould having separable top and bottom sections, the gate is closed by a plunger valve after the mould cavity is filled, and after solidification of the metal the casting is lifted from the mould by exerting a lifting force on the plunger valve. The apparatus is substantially the same as that described in the parent Specification which is referred to. The plunger valve 122 comprises a tube 130 and a plug 134 of, e.g., iron or ceramic, and a seat portion 126 of, e.g., ceramic. The tube is preferably filled with sand. After removal of the poured mould from the pouring tube 22 by the crane 90, and after the metal has solidified, a pin is inserted in one of the holes 128 in the stopper above the upper surface of the cope 64, and the cope is elevated, as by jacks, until it is lifted from the casting, and the casting is lifted from the drag by the plunger 122 when the cope abuts the pin. The casting is thereby suspended between the cope and the drag so that as it cools it may contract radially. Thereafter the upper end of the stopper is cut off, the plug 134 knocked out and the sand allowed to drain out, and the seat portion 132 knocked off. Dividing by fusion.-The central portion of the casting with the stopper is finally cut out by a torch 140 to form an axle hole, the casting 138 being mounted on a rotatable table 139.
