Abstract

725,510. Sawing. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Aug. 6, 1953 [Aug. 15, 1952], No. 21725/53. Class 145. A cutter link for a chain saw has a cutting edge consisting of substantially straight-line edges meeting each other at obtuse angles and formed on a toe portion 17, on a portion 16 of the shank proper 15 substantially perpendicular to the toe portion and on one or more intermediate portions 18 joining the toe and shank portions. All the portions slope rearwardly to provide cutting clearance and their sharpened edges rake rearwardly from a foremost point 29. The edges may be sharpened by a round file or rod-shaped grinding wheel held parallel to the toe-portion edge 21 so that the latter is fully hollow-ground, the intermediate-portion edge 23 is somewhat hollowground, the shank-portion edge 25 has a bevel and a portion 27 of the shank is also sharpened. The included angles between the shank and intermediate portions and the toe and intermediate portions are preferably about 125 degrees and 135 degrees respectively. The toe portion 17 may be laterally inclined away from the link body 14 so that its raked cutting edge 21 is exactly perpendicular to the body or may be perpendicular to the body so that its edge is inclined to the body, in which case, the link severs a strip 71 from the kerf at both ends 55 and 67 instead of tearing the wood at the inner end of the toe portion. The chain comprises cutter links, driving links and side connector links and the cutter links are of opposite hand simply alternated or with two or more links of the same hand in succession. The depth gauge 19 may be co-planar with the links body or inclined as shown in Fig. 10. The toeportion may be tipped with tungsten carbide or other hard cutting material to form the edge 21 and at least part of the edge 23. The maximum thickness of the link occurs at the intermediate portion 18. Specification 658,729 and U.S.A. Specification 2,326,854 are referred to.
