Abstract
725,328. Windscreen washers. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION, Feb. 27, 1953 [March 6, 1952], No. 5597/53. Class 138 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] A windshield washer nozzle comprises a hollow portion having a deformable, flexible wall with a discharge orifice therein, a mounting means therefor, whereby a jet of liquid produced by a pump connected to the nozzle may be directed from the orifice on to a predetermined area of the windscreen, the flexible wall being elastic so that if the orifice becomes clogged it can be caused to distend to release the obstruction by an abnormal liquid pressure produced either by continued action of the pump or by manually squeezing the nozzle. As shown in Fig. 1, the windscreen washer system comprises a liquid reservoir 6, a pump 7 which may be of the kind described in Specification 467,950, and a nozzle 8 mounted on a cowl fitting 5 at the bottom of the windshield 1. On operating a valve 13, the intake manifold 14 of the vehicle is placed in communication with the pump 7 by a pipe 12 so that a diaphragm 9 is lifted against a spring 10 to draw up a charge of liquid into the pump. The return stroke of the diaphragm under the action of the spring 10 causes the liquid to pass through a pipe 11 to the nozzle 8 and thus on to the windshield in the path of the wiper blade 2. The nozzle 8, Fig. 2 is made of rubber or plastic having a heavy base section 15 and cap part 16 of variable wall thickness. A nozzle mounting member 19 is threaded onto the pipe 11 and has a ball-shaped outer end 21 provided with shoulders 23 to adjustably grip the section 15, and a liquid passage 22. The cap part 16 has a flattened thin wall portion 24 surrounding a puncture 17 the location of which may be identified by a marker nib 24'. When liquid is supplied to the nozzle from the pump the pressure will cause the puncture to dilate so that a jet may issue therefrom. Should the puncture become clogged with foreign matter the build-up of pressure in the nozzle will cause further dilation of the puncture and thus the freeing of the obstruction. However the nozzle may be rolled between the fingers to dilate the puncture. In so doing the collapsible wall of the nozzle will more or less block the liquid passage and thereby cause the entrapped liquid in the nozzle to be brought under pressure to dilate the puncture. The puncture may be in the form of a slit with or without a central perforation as described with reference to Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). Instead of a puncture, a perforation may be provided which may also be surrounded by reinforcing rib, so described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 8 the nozzle 8g is mounted on a shoulder 53 on a tubular stem 48 integral with a ball 49 adjustably mounted in a socket 50 formed in the end of the pipe 11, by means of a screwed collar 52. A reduced wall 46 of the nozzle is provided with an orifice 47. Internally, the nozzle orifice is manually dilated. This valving action to prevent reverse flow of liquid may also be accomplished by the provision of a check valve 57, Fig. 1, disposed between the nozzle 8 and a pipe 58 leading to a nozzle for the other half of the windshield. Further embodiments of the nozzle are described with reference to Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown).
