Abstract

724,976. Steering vehicles. FRESIA, G. B., and FRESIA, G. March 23, 1953, No. 7860/53. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] In a pivotal mounting for a third axle suspension of a motor vehicle, enabling the wheels of the third axle to follow the tracks of the wheels of the axle immediately in front thereof, a mechanical connection is formed between the second and third axles comprising a substantially triangular framework having the vertex thereof pivoted at a point near to the second axle, the base portion of the framework being rigidly fixed to the third axle and comprising a sliding member adapted to move through the intermediary of an antifriction material within an arcuate guide fitted above the third axle and having its centre on the axis of the pivot of the triangular frame, the guide being fixed to the vehicle chassis in such a manner that the sliding member allows the third axle to rotate around the pivot of the framework. In the arrangement shown, in which a third axle T is pivotally connected to a stirrup 2 on a second axle 1 by means of a pair of legs 5, a sliding member 6 is secured to the axle T for sliding movement in an arcuate guide 7 supported at each end from the chassis by leaf springs 8. The pivotal connection of the legs 5 comprises a rubber bush mounting having an outer extension 4 forming a housing for a spring-loaded piston member 13 to which the adjacent ends of the legs 5 are secured. The sliding member 6 is of antifriction metal lubricated with oil. In the arrangement according to Fig. 6 (not shown) the rubber bush mounting is replaced by a ball bearing pivot. and includes a hydraulic shock absorber. The member 6 slides on rollers mounted within the guide. In a modification the rollers may be replaced by ball bearings located between the slide and guide surfaces. In a further arrange. ment (Fig. 3, not shown), a pneumatic or hydraulically operated locking device mounted on the guide and controlled from the driving position, comprises a spring-loaded piston having an extended piston rod which is adapted to co-operate with holes in the axle T by which the position of the latter may be locked.
