724,760. Coating wires &c. by extrusion. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS' CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 6, 1953 [Oct. 7, 1952], No. 25124/52. Class 87 (2). In order to prevent leakage during stoppages in the coating of filaments, such as wire, yarn, cord, &c. with liquid or pasty material by extrusion, the applicator has an axial passage 5, Fig. 1, in which slides a tube 6 through the bore 7 of which the filament passes to the coating material in the interior 3 of the tube 1 and thence out through axial aperture 11 of plug 10. The tube may be moved from a retracted position where it is held by, e.g., the pressure of the fluid, spring pressure or gravity, to a forward position where the conical end face 13 engages with the conical recess 12 in plug 10 where it is held by the engagement of cup 9 with the projecting part of plug 4. Cup 9 may engage plug 4 for the whole length of travel of tube 6. An interchangeable nipple 17 may be secured on plug 10 by cap 16. In 'a modification the tube 6 (Fig. 2) is held in place by the engagement of screw thread 18 with an internal thread in the upper end of bore 5 and may be moved so that in the forward position thread 18 engages threaded socket 19 to connect bores 11 and 7. The applicator may also be positioned so that the wire travels downwards, horizontally or at an angle. The level of the coating liquid may be maintained below the top of the side wall of the applicator, so that the wire may emerge from the free surface of the coating liquid and in such a case the upper cover has an opening well-spaced from the coating wire, the sliding tube being arranged to make joint with the under face of the cover so as to prevent leakage.
