Abstract

An aqueous hair-waving composition of pH 8.6 to 9.5 comprises (per litre) 0.35-0.8 gram-mols. of a thiol, 0.5-4 gram-mols. of urea, methyl urea or ethyl urea and, when the thiol is a thioglycollate, to prevent over-processing, 0.25-2.0 gram-mols. of a non-toxic water-soluble ammonium salt of a strong mineral acid, capable of de-swelling hair but incapable of reducing it. Specified thiols include ammonium and sodium thioglycollates, the sodium and ammonium salts of mercaptoethane sulphonic acid and of 3-mercapto-2-hydroxypropane sulphonic acid, cysteine, b -mercaptoethylamine, b -hydroxyethanethiol, monomercaptodimethyl ketone, b -monomercaptodiethyl ether, ethyl thioglycollate and the p amides of thioglycollic acid. Specified ammonium salts include ammonium sulphate, chloride and phosphate. Perfumes, wetting agents and creaming agents may also be included in the compositions. In an example a solution containing (per litre) 2.6 gram-mols. of urea, 0.45 gram-mols. of ammonium thioglycollate and 0.5 gram-mols. of ammonium sulphate, brought to pH 9.4 by addition of ammonium hydroxide, is used for waving hair.
