Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0723317/IV (b)/1> in which R is an alkyl group containing 7 to 18 carbon atoms, M is H, K, Na, NH4 or an amine; n is 0, 1 or 2 and alkylene is propylene, butylene or trimethylene. They may be prepared by replacing the hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen atoms of a compound of formula <FORM:0723317/IV (b)/2> with acetic acid groups by treating such a compound with alkali metal cyanide and formaldehyde at elevated temperature in aqueous alcohol solution and in the presence of free caustic alkali, and hydrolysing the product. In an example (a) N,N1 dioctyl butylene diamine in butanol solution is heated with sodium cyanide and formaldehyde to give the sodium salt of N,N1-dioctyl butylene diamine diacetic acid which is acidified to give the corresponding acid of formula <FORM:0723317/IV (b)/3> (b) N,N1-di-dodecyl ethylene diamine diacetic acid; and (c) N,N1-di-octadecyl ethylene diamine diacetic acid are similarly prepared.
