Abstract
A mild steel strip is cleaned by grinding, burnishing or etching, e.g. by anodic treatment in 5 per cent hydrochloric acid at 100 amps/sq. ft. It is then immersed in a bath containing 90 per cent zinc chloride and 10 per cent ammonium chloride at 400 DEG C. to provide a flux coating on the strip and then into a bath of aluminium containing 1/2 per cent of beryllium at 675 DEG C. for about 15 seconds. It is then removed and allowed to drain so as to leave a surface layer of aluminium alloy having a thickness of about 0.002 in. Cooling may be accelerated by spraying or dipping in water or oil. A layer of high tin aluminium alloy is finally bonded to the surface layer of aluminium by heavy cold rolling, [Group XXII], to produce composite material for bearings.
