Abstract

721,997. Motor vehicles. MONTGOMERY, F. M. Jan. 10, 1952 [Jan. 12, 1951], No. 978/51. Classes 79(2), 79(3), 79(4) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXX] In an industrial power truck having a platform adapted to enter beneath a load on a pallet or stillage, rollers supporting the platform and a driving and steering wheel, the wheel is mounted on a turntable, which also mounts a power unit, a clutch for connecting the power unit to the wheel and a brake for holding the wheel, the power unit is above and coaxial with the turntable and is within a rounded casing above which is a tiller member for turning the turntable and pivoted for canting up and down, and control means for the clutch and brake extend from the tiller member through the top of the casing so as to be operated by canting the tiller member. As shown the truck frame comprises forwardly projecting members 11, 12 supported by the rollers 20, interconnected by a member 16 and connected to channel sectioned uprights 13, 14 which are interconnected at the top by a member 15. Rearwardly projecting from the member 16 are roller carrying brackets 21 and a bracket 17 carrying by means of ball or roller bearings the turntable 38 from which project downwardly brakets 39 acting as hornplates for axles boxes 40 carrying the wheel 18 and its associated brake 60, the wheel 18 carrying a sprocket 48. The sprocket is driven from an engine 43 through a chain 47, the clutch 46 and a change speed gear box 44 mounted above the turntable 38 between plates 50, 51, the engine, clutch and gear box being enclosed by removable semicircular casing parts 42. Mounted above the plates 50, 51 is a fuel tank and a sump containing a hydraulic pump, which are contained in a casing 52. The pump supplies a hydraulic ram 27 to operate the load carrying platform 23 slidably mounted on the uprights 13, 14 (see Group XXX). Above the casing 52 is a hollow projection 53 carrying a horizontal pivot 153 on which is mounted the tiller member 55 on which are mounted auxiliary steering handles 62, 63, 64 and is pivoted a handle member 56, the tiller being normally operated by the member 56 but by the handles 62, 63, 64 when the member 56 is not accessible. The pivoting of the member 56 enables the fore and aft length of the truck to be shortened when necessary and the pivoting is controlled by a latch 156 operated by a trigger 61. Movement of the tiller member 55 about the pivot 153 controls the clutch 46 and the brake 60, the clutch being engaged by tensioning cable 158 connected to an arm 155 and the brake being applied by tensioning a rod 58 connected to an arm 154. A spring 157 is arranged to urge the member 55 into the brake applied position. The gear box 44 is controlled by a lever 66 through a rock shaft 65.
