Abstract

721,867. Photo-electric devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 23, 1952, No. 32651/52. Class 37. [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (b)] A detector of penetrating radiations comprises an outer casing pervious to the radiations but impervious to visible light and containing a layer of phosphor and a photo-electric cell responsive to light produced by the phosphor under the influence of the penetrating radiations. As shown, a plastic casing 3 contains two photo-electric cells each consisting of a steel plate 1 with a layer of selenium and translucent conducting metals. Between the two cells are a number of lumps of the phosphor 4 which may be thallium activated sodium iodide or potassium iodide crystals. The space between the cells is filled with a light transmitting oil such as a paraffin base petroleum oil. This oil prevents absorption of moisture by the phosphor, improves the light transmission to the cells and reduces surface reflection from the cells. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a single cell is used the backing plate being of aluminium which forms part of the casing which is also of aluminium.
