Abstract
721,724. Fishing reels. AKTIEBOLAGET URFABRIKEN. Oct. 14, 1952 [Oct. 15, 1951], No. 25768/52. Class 48. A mechanism for disconnecting a clutch connecting the spool and the driving mechanism of a fishing reel and for retaining the clutch in released position comprises a manually operable lever 1 for actuating the clutch and two swing- able locking arms 18, 19 arranged so that at least one of them retains the lever 1 in clutch releasing position on actuation of the lever 1 at any position of the handle 5 of the driving mechanism, the locking arms being actuated by operation of the driving mechanism to permit re-engagement of the clutch. When the lever 1 is pushed radially into the reel casing it displaces towards the right a spring-returned pivoted arm 10 which in turn carries a clutch element 9 out of engagement with a co-operating clutch element 8 thus disconnecting a gear 4 from the shaft 7 of the spool. The locking arms 18, 19 are pivoted on pins 20, 21 disposed on either side of the shaft 24 of the handle and are urged by springs 22, 23 to abut studs 16, 17 on the lever 1 and fixed studs 20a, 21a on the casing. The studs 16, 17 on the lever 1 are arranged in relation to the locking arms so that when the lever is held in its fully inward position by the stud 16 engaging the locking arm 18 the other stud 17 is spaced from the other locking arm 19 (see Fig. 2). The arms are rocked alternately on rotating the handle 5 by a pin 26 on a disc 25 on the shaft 24 of the handle engaging cam faces on the arms. Thus the pin 26 engages and swings the arm 18 as the handle is rotated from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 so that the arm 18 allows the lever 1 to be moved downwardly by a spring 12 until the arm is arrested by the stud 17 abutting the other arm 19. Further rotation of the handle causes the pin to engage and swing the arm 19 so that the lever 1 moves down farther to the position corresponding to the clutch being engaged. The arm 18 is so shaped that it is prevented by the stud 16 from returning to its locking position when the pin 26 disengages from its cam surface; and when the lever is in the clutch engaging position the studs 16, 17 prevent the locking arms from returning to abut the stops 20a, 21a. In a modified construction both locking arms are journalled on a common pivot pin and the lever 1 has only one stud.with which both arms engage. In another modification, Fig. 8, one 31 of the studs on the lever 1 is vertically slidable in an elongated slot in the lever and is normally held at the bottom of the slot by a spring 32. Alternatively the pivot pin of the locking arm 18 extends through an elongated slot in the arm so that the arm can move vertically and a spring acts between the pivot pin and the arm to hold the pin normally at the bottom of the slot.
