Abstract

A silver salt reducing agent such as hydroquinone is added to a freshly formed mixture of a water soluble silver salt and an alkali metal sulphite in an aqueous solution containing dissolved gelatin and a water soluble calcium compound to make a silver dispersion suitable for the purpose of forming (see Group XX) a blue, neutral or dark-coloured photographic antihalation layer. The calcium compound may be that normally present in gelatin, or if delimed gelatin is used an addition as of calcium acetate is necessary. In absence of the calcium compound, or if addition of the reducing agent is delayed, the ordinary yellow silver dispersion is formed.
