Abstract
721,324. Bearings. SCHAFER, G., and SCHAFER, O., [trading as KUGELFISCHER G. SCHAFER & CO.]. July 1, 1952. No. 16585/52. Class 12 (1). A bearing of the pivoted or tilted pad type is described for a journal bearing having a split outer ring 1 between which is interposed sealing material 7, a load distributing member 2, a liner or layer 3 of elastic material such as a phenol or cresol-formaldehyde condensation product or hard paper about 1 mm. thick, intermediate pieces 4 supported by prism joints on the member 2, and felt or other porous material 6 containing oil. When the shaft 5 rotates at velocity u, Fig. 6, the pieces 4 pivot about the prism joints and provide wedge shaped oil filled clearances between the elastic liner 3 and the shaft, the pressure curve p(x) for the load on the pieces 4 being in the form of an isosceles triangle, i.e. the distribution of the load along the bearing surface of the liner 3 is a maximum in the middle and zero at both ends. The elastic liner 3 is diagrammatically represented as a series of springs pressing against a thin flexible sheet, x being the coordinates of the liner in the direction of friction. It is stated that no pressure gradient is present in the direction transverse to the direction in which the friction acts, the elasticity of the liner 3 allowing its edges to contact the sliding surface and prevent the outflow of oil at the edges. The bearing should operate with the layer of lubricant having a thickness of 2-5 microns, the thickness of the layer of oil behind each support 2, 3, 4 (in the direction of rotation) being approximately half as thick as the average thickness of the layer in front of the support.
